A major change to the way Australia’s skilled migration program identifies and selects skilled migrants will be launched on 01 July 2012 in the form of SkillSelect.

SkillSelect will provide an online system that will allow intending skilled workers to submit their details so that they may be consider for a skilled visa. All skilled workers wishing to migrate to Australia as a skilled migrant will need to submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) in SkillSelect.

The system is designed to improve the delivery of skills to the Australia economy in occupations that are needed most. The government will be able to select applicants with skills in high demand, regulate the number of applicants per occupation and determine to which region of Australia they settle.

The SkillSelect system aims to benefit both employers and state governments experiencing regional skill shortages, but also improve settlement and employment outcomes for migrants by directing them to where their skills are needed most.

Skilled workers who make an EOI may be selected by a state or territory government or an Australian employer with a skilled job vacancy.

Employers will be able to identify and contact skilled workers to fill skill shortages. The government points to reduced advertising and recruitment costs and addressing regional skills shortages as key advantages to using SkillSelect.

More information on the SkillSelect process will be made available prior to the system launch on 01 July. In the meantime, if you have any questions regarding the above or would like to discuss your skilled migration needs in greater detail, please don’t hesitate to contact me on (03) 9600 0333.
